Stress doesn’t disappear in recovery—your tools change. These coping skills are practical, repeatable, and designed for real life (not perfect life).
A Fast “Reset” When Stress Spikes
When stress hits hard, your brain wants instant relief. Try this quick reset first:
-
Grounding: name 5 things you see, 4 you feel, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, 1 you taste.
-
Cold water: splash your face or hold something cold for 20–30 seconds.
-
Micro-move: 30 seconds of stretching or pacing breaks the stress loop.
Breathing Technique (Simple, Not Silly)
Try box breathing: inhale 4 seconds, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4. Repeat 4 cycles.
-
Hand placement: one hand on chest, one on belly—aim for slower breaths.
-
Exhale longer if you can (often calms faster).
Journaling (When Your Brain Won’t Shut Off)
Try one of these quick prompts:
-
“What am I feeling right now?”
-
“What do I need?” (rest, food, support, quiet, movement)
-
“What’s one small next step?” (doable in 10 minutes)
Walking & Movement
If you can’t do a full workout, don’t. Do a 10-minute walk. Or pace indoors.
Support Systems (The Skill That Makes Skills Work)
Coping works better when you’re not doing it alone. Consider:
-
Peer support (groups, communities, recovery meetings).
-
Clinical support (telemedicine or in-office check-ins).
-
Structure (routine, sleep, meals, realistic daily targets).
If you’re in immediate danger, call 911. If you’re in the U.S. and need urgent emotional support, call 988.
